VIN check New South Wales: free decode, then finance and write-off check
Validate and decode any 17-character VIN free. Then search the PPSR for $12.95 to see whether a NSW car has finance owing, is recorded as stolen or has been written off.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
Where to find the VIN on a New South Wales car and its rego papers
Look first at the compliance plate, usually riveted in the engine bay or on the driver-side door pillar. The same 17 characters appear on a sticker in the driver door jamb. On most cars built since the 1990s they are also on a plate visible through the bottom corner of the windscreen.
In NSW the VIN is printed on the certificate of registration and on the renewal notice from Service NSW. A seller who cannot produce either should at least let you photograph the compliance plate. Compare every character; a VIN with an I, O or Q in it has been misread.
The Service NSW free rego check will not give you the whole number. It prints only the last four characters of the VIN alongside the make, model, variant and colour. Those four characters are still useful: check them against the VIN the seller gave you. If you only have the plate, our search box converts a NSW rego to the full VIN and shows you the car before you pay.
What a VIN check shows
The free part reads the VIN itself. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and country of build, the ninth is a check digit, and the tenth often encodes a model year. A decode confirms the number is well formed and names the maker. It cannot say whether the car exists, who financed it or whether it was crashed.
The paid part is a search of the Personal Property Securities Register. The certificate lists any security interest over the VIN and names the secured party. It also carries the NEVDIS stolen flag, the Written-Off Vehicle Register entry with its damage codes, and the plate, expiry, make, model and colour the register holds. For a NSW car a write-off entry matters more than elsewhere, because NSW has barred most repairable write-offs from re-registration since 2011.
The $27.95 car check report decodes the damage codes and adds Register of Approved Vehicles identity and build date for cars first supplied from about 2021. It lists open recalls for the make, model and year and includes a free finance re-check within 14 days.
Free VIN checks in New South Wales
Our free VIN check validates the format and check digit and tells you the manufacturer. It costs nothing and does not ask for an email address. Use it to catch a mistyped character before paying for any search.
NSW buyers have one free source other states lack. The Service NSW free rego check returns up to three yearly odometer readings taken at the annual safety inspection, for cars old enough to need one. Compare them with the odometer in the car. A reading that goes backwards, or a jump that does not fit the car, is worth a direct question.
The Register of Approved Vehicles at rover.infrastructure.gov.au is free by VIN and covers cars first supplied in Australia from about 2021. It shows make, model code, build date, approval pathway and whether the car arrived as a used import. For the typical ten-year-old NSW car it will return nothing.
You can also buy the PPSR certificate yourself for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au. You will need the full VIN, because the register does not accept plates, and you will get the raw certificate with its codes unexplained.
How to check finance and write-offs by VIN
- Confirm the VIN three ways: compliance plate, rego certificate, and the last four characters on the Service NSW free check.
- Type the VIN or the NSW plate into the search box above. We display the make, model and year so you can confirm it is the right car.
- Choose the $12.95 certificate or the $27.95 report and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Most reports arrive within two minutes.
- Act on the result. Finance showing means you need a payout letter from the named lender before money changes hands. A write-off entry on a NSW car usually means a statutory write-off, which cannot be registered again.
- Note the 16-digit search number. It lets you retrieve the certificate free from the PPSR later, and it is your proof of when you searched.
What it cannot tell you
- The amount owing on any finance. Only the lender can tell you that, through a payout letter.
- How many registered operators the car has had. Service NSW sells a separate paid vehicle history report with the operator count and first NSW registration date; the PPSR does not hold it.
- Whether the car has been in an accident that was repaired without an insurance claim.
- Whether a Tasmanian-registered car is stolen, because Tasmania does not supply stolen records to the PPSR. NSW records are supplied.
- Whether the seller is the registered operator. The PPSR certificate names secured parties, never owners.

Questions people ask
Is there a free VIN check in NSW?
Yes, for part of the picture. Our decoder is free, the Service NSW rego check is free, and the Register of Approved Vehicles is free for cars first supplied from about 2021. None of them shows finance or write-off status; that comes from the PPSR, which charges $2.00 direct or $12.95 through us with the plate lookup and verdict included.
Does the Service NSW free rego check show the VIN?
Only the last four characters. Service NSW masks the rest. That is enough to confirm a VIN the seller has given you, but not enough to run a PPSR search, which needs all 17 characters.
How do I get the full VIN from a NSW number plate?
Ask the seller for the rego certificate or a photo of the compliance plate, or enter the plate and state in our search box. We look up the VIN, show you the make, model and year to confirm, and only then ask you to pay.
Does a NSW VIN check include odometer readings?
The PPSR certificate does not. The Service NSW free rego check does, with up to three yearly readings from safety inspections. We suggest running both and comparing the readings with the car in front of you.
Is a repairable write-off a problem in NSW?
More than in other states. NSW has not re-registered repairable write-offs since 2011 except in narrow cases. A NSW car on the Written-Off Vehicle Register is therefore almost always a statutory write-off, which can only be used for parts.
Is the certificate the same as the one from ppsr.gov.au?
Yes. We deliver the PPSR certificate exactly as the Registrar issues it, unaltered, with its search number printed on your report and in the email.
