Victoria rego check: free status lookup, plus what it won’t tell you

The Victorian free rego check is the only one in Australia that prints the full VIN. That makes the next step, a PPSR check for finance and write-offs, easier here than anywhere else.

Check Victoria rego free

Use the Service Victoria free rego check linked above. It is free and draws directly on VicRoads records. Choose the vehicle type, then enter the registration number, the VIN or the chassis number. It covers vehicles registered in Victoria; an interstate plate returns nothing. Being able to search by VIN is handy: it lets you confirm the VIN on a compliance plate really is registered in Victoria against the plate on the car.

The result shows the registration status, expiry date, make, body type, colour and year of manufacture, plus the full 17-character VIN and the engine number. That is everything you need to run a PPSR search yourself, which is why Victorians can use the $2.00 direct option more easily than buyers elsewhere.

What it leaves out is also worth knowing: no CTP insurer, because in Victoria the TAC charge is part of the rego, and no odometer readings. Service Victoria tells you plainly to use the PPSR for stolen and written-off status.

What the free Victoria check doesn’t show

The free check cannot tell you whether a lender has a security interest over the car, whether it is recorded as stolen, or whether it has been written off and repaired. It also says nothing about how many people have owned it or what it has been used for.

The Personal Property Securities Register answers the first three. With the VIN from the free check you can search it for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au and receive the certificate as issued, codes unexplained. Our $12.95 PPSR certificate is the same document with a plain-English verdict, a free re-run if you mistype, and a refund if nothing arrives.

Write-off entries matter in Victoria because a repairable write-off can come back onto the road after a Vehicle Identity Validation inspection. A car with current rego can have a write-off entry and be entirely legal to drive; it is just worth less and needs a closer look at the repairs.

Rego check vs PPSR check in Victoria

The two checks overlap only on the car’s description. Run them in order: the free check to identify the car and copy the VIN, then the PPSR certificate on the day you pay.

Victoria rego fees, renewal and transfer

Victorian registration is billed as one amount that bundles the registration fee, the TAC charge and insurance duty, with the TAC portion varying by where the car is garaged. Current figures, short-term options and concessions are on the VicRoads site, and renewal there carries no agent fee. We do not sell renewals or reminders.

A private seller must provide a current roadworthy certificate when transferring a registered car, and the buyer lodges the transfer with VicRoads, paying duty on the price or market value. Both the transfer process and the duty calculator are on the VicRoads site. The roadworthy certificate also prints the VIN, which gives you one more document to match.

Buying a used car in Victoria: the three checks

Start with the Service Victoria free rego check. Match the plate to the make, colour and body, copy the full VIN, and compare that VIN with the compliance plate and the roadworthy certificate. Three matching VINs is the first sign of an honest sale.

Then run the PPSR check with that VIN on the day you pay. If a security interest is listed, ask the seller for a payout letter from the lender named on the certificate. If a repairable write-off is listed, ask for the VIV inspection paperwork and the repair invoices.

Finally, have the car inspected. A roadworthy certificate confirms it met minimum safety standards on the day of the test, not that it is a good car. An independent pre-purchase inspection is the only step that looks at engine, gearbox and body repairs.

Questions people ask

Is the Victorian rego check free?

Yes. The Service Victoria check is free and comes straight from VicRoads records. Sites charging for Victorian registration status are repackaging that lookup. The PPSR search for finance, stolen and write-off status is the only part with a cost: $2.00 direct or $12.95 here.

Can I check Victorian rego with just the plate?

Yes, and you can also search by VIN or chassis number. The plate search returns the full VIN and engine number as well as the status, expiry, make, colour and body type.

Does the VicRoads rego check show the owner?

No. The free check never shows the registered operator. VicRoads sells a separate paid vehicle report that shows the number of Victorian operators, transfer history and roadworthy odometer readings, but not names.

How do I find the VIN from the rego in Victoria?

Enter the plate in the Service Victoria free rego check and the full 17-character VIN is printed in the result. Victoria is the only state that does this. Our search box also accepts the plate if you would rather we handle the lookup.

Does the free check show if a Victorian car is stolen or written off?

No. Service Victoria points you to the PPSR for both. The PPSR certificate carries the NEVDIS stolen flag and the Written-Off Vehicle Register entry with damage codes.

Why do I need a PPSR check if the car has a roadworthy certificate?

A roadworthy certificate covers mechanical safety on the day of the test. It does not look at finance, theft records or write-off history, and a car can pass a roadworthy with all three against it.
