Caravan VIN check: finance and stolen status on the PPSR
Caravans are financed, stolen and resold like cars, and the PPSR covers them. Enter the rego and state, or the VIN from the compliance plate, and we return the official certificate for $12.95.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
Where the VIN is on a caravan
Australian-built caravans since 1989 carry a 17-character VIN on a compliance plate. It is usually riveted to the A-frame drawbar near the coupling, inside a front boot or beside the entry door. Many manufacturers also stamp the VIN into the drawbar or chassis rail. Older vans and some imports have a chassis number instead; the PPSR accepts that in place of a VIN.
Check the number on the plate against the stamping on the chassis and against the registration papers. Compliance plates are easy to swap; a chassis stamping is not.
What the PPSR shows for a caravan
Caravans are often bought with finance and sold privately years later, so an undischarged interest is a real risk. The NEVDIS stolen and written-off data for caravans may be limited compared with cars. A clear NEVDIS result is therefore less conclusive for a van than for a car. The finance result is as reliable as it is for any vehicle.
- Finance owing: any security interest registered against the VIN or chassis number, and the lender named on it. The amount owing is never shown.
- Stolen status from NEVDIS where a record exists, except for Tasmanian records.
- Written-off status where recorded, and the registration details held for the identifier.
How to check a caravan VIN
- Find the VIN on the compliance plate on the drawbar and confirm it matches the chassis stamping and the papers.
- Enter the rego and state, or the VIN or chassis number, in the search box above and confirm the details we show.
- Pay $12.95 for the certificate or $27.95 for the report.
- Read the finance section first. If an interest shows, ask the seller for a payout letter from the lender and settle it at handover.
- Have the VIN? The search is $2 at ppsr.gov.au if you would rather run it yourself.
What a caravan VIN check cannot show
Water damage, structural repairs, gas and electrical compliance and service history are not on any register. Build data from the Register of Approved Vehicles covers only vehicles supplied from about 2021. Your state's free rego check confirms registration status; Service Victoria's has a caravan and trailer category and prints the VIN from the plate.

Questions people ask
Can you do a PPSR check on a caravan?
Yes. A caravan with a VIN or chassis number is searched on the PPSR like a car. The certificate shows any finance owing and the secured party, plus whatever NEVDIS holds for the identifier.
Where is the VIN on a caravan?
On the compliance plate, usually on the A-frame drawbar near the coupling, inside the front boot or beside the door. It is often stamped into the drawbar or chassis rail as well.
Can I do a caravan history check by rego?
Yes. Enter the plate and state and we look up the VIN. The PPSR itself does not accept a plate.
Does the PPSR show if a caravan is stolen?
It shows NEVDIS stolen records where they exist, except for Tasmania. Stolen and written-off data for caravans may be limited compared with cars, so also check the VIN plate against the chassis stamping.
Is a caravan VIN check free?
The PPSR search is $2 at ppsr.gov.au with the VIN or chassis number. Our $12.95 check adds the plate lookup, the plain-English result and a free re-run if you mistype.
