VIN check South Australia: free decode, then finance and write-off check
Decode a VIN free and check it is well formed. Then run the $12.95 PPSR check to learn whether a South Australian car has finance owing, a stolen record or a write-off entry.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
Where to find the VIN on a South Australian car and its rego papers
Start with the compliance plate, which most makers fix in the engine bay or on the driver-side door pillar. The VIN is repeated on the driver door jamb sticker and, on most cars, on a small plate at the base of the windscreen on the driver side. Read it from the metal, not from the ad.
In South Australia the VIN is printed on the registration details certificate and on the renewal notice from Service SA. Sellers who manage their rego through EzyReg can also show it in their account. Any of these is fine as long as it matches the car.
The EzyReg free rego check shows only the last four digits of the VIN. That is deliberate. Use those four characters to confirm a VIN the seller has sent you. When you need the full number from a rego alone, use the plate option in our search box.
What a VIN check shows
The decode is the free, instant part. It confirms the 17 characters are valid, tests the check digit, names the manufacturer and country of build, and reads the model year where the maker encodes one. It cannot see the car’s past.
The Personal Property Securities Register is the past. Its certificate shows any security interest registered over the VIN and who holds it. It adds the NEVDIS stolen flag, the Written-Off Vehicle Register entry and its damage codes, and the plate, expiry, make, model and colour held for that VIN. South Australia lets a repairable write-off back on the road after an identity inspection, so those entries do appear on registered cars.
The $27.95 car check report decodes the damage codes and adds build date and approval pathway from the Register of Approved Vehicles for cars first supplied from about 2021. It lists open safety recalls for the make, model and year and includes a free finance re-check within 14 days.
Free VIN checks in South Australia
Run our free VIN check first. It takes a second and catches the misread characters that make a paid search come back empty.
The EzyReg free rego check, linked above, has one feature no other state offers. If the car is recorded as suspended, stolen, defected or written off, it shows a general warning. It does not say which of the four applies, and it gives no details. Treat it as a prompt to run the PPSR search rather than a result in itself. A defect notice in particular is an SA matter the PPSR does not record.
The Register of Approved Vehicles at rover.infrastructure.gov.au is a free Australian Government lookup by VIN for cars first supplied in Australia from about 2021. It shows make, model code, build date and whether the car came in as a new vehicle or a used import. Older cars return nothing.
The PPSR charges $2.00 per search at ppsr.gov.au, by VIN only. The certificate is identical to the one we deliver. The difference is the plate lookup, the plain-English verdict and the free re-run if you mistype.
How to check finance and write-offs by VIN
- Read the VIN from the compliance plate and check its last four digits against the EzyReg free check and the registration details certificate.
- Enter the VIN, or the South Australian plate, in the search box above. We show the make, model and year before you pay.
- Choose the $12.95 PPSR certificate or the $27.95 car check report and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Read the verdict. Finance showing means a payout letter from the named lender before you pay. A write-off entry means asking for the identity inspection paperwork and repair invoices. An EzyReg warning with a clean PPSR certificate points to a suspension or defect, so ask the seller about it directly.
- Keep the 16-digit search number. You can retrieve the certificate free from the PPSR at any time.
What it cannot tell you
- How much is owing. The register records the interest and the lender, never the balance.
- Owner history. South Australia does not sell an owner-count report, and the PPSR never names owners.
- Why EzyReg showed a warning. The free check lumps suspended, stolen, defected and written-off together; the PPSR resolves stolen and written-off, but not a defect notice or suspension.
- Odometer history. No SA source publishes readings, so rely on the service book and a pre-purchase inspection.
- Privately repaired accident damage that was never reported to an insurer.

Questions people ask
Is a VIN check free in South Australia?
The decode, the EzyReg rego check and the Register of Approved Vehicles are free. Finance, stolen and write-off status come from the PPSR, which costs $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au or $12.95 through us with the plate lookup, verdict and free re-run included.
Does the EzyReg check show the full VIN?
No, only the last four digits. That is enough to confirm a VIN the seller has given you but not enough to run a PPSR search. Enter the plate in our search box and we look up the full VIN and show you the car before you pay.
What does the EzyReg warning mean?
It means the car is recorded as suspended, stolen, defected or written off, without saying which. Run the PPSR check to settle the stolen and write-off questions, and ask the seller about defects and suspension, which the PPSR does not record.
Does a VIN check show a defect notice in SA?
No. Defect notices are a state matter and do not appear on the PPSR. The EzyReg warning is your only free signal, and the seller should be able to show you the clearance paperwork.
Can a repairable write-off be registered in South Australia?
Yes, after it passes an identity inspection. The PPSR certificate will still show the write-off entry and its damage codes for the life of the car. Buyers of repaired cars should expect a lower price.
