REVS check NT: finance, stolen and written-off, from $12.95
Territory cars travel. A ute sold in Darwin may have been written off in Queensland and financed in Western Australia. One PPSR search covers all of it. Enter an NT plate or a VIN and the official $2 certificate arrives with a verdict in minutes.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
How to do a REVS check in the Northern Territory
The MVR free rego check on nt.gov.au shows no VIN, so most Territory buyers cannot search the PPSR themselves without asking the seller. Our plate lookup removes that step.
- Enter the NT plate and select NT, or paste the VIN from the registration certificate or the compliance plate.
- Confirm the make, model and year we show before you pay.
- Select the $12.95 certificate or the $27.95 car check report.
- Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The verdict opens immediately and the PDF follows by email.
- Repeat the search on the day you pay if the sale is private. The second certificate is the one that protects you.
What an NT REVS check shows
A certificate tells you whether a lender has registered an interest over the car and whether the VIN is recorded as stolen. It also tells you whether the car has ever been declared a write-off. For a write-off it shows the classification, statutory or repairable, and the state that made the record.
The Northern Territory records write-offs on the national register and requires a repairable write-off to pass an inspection before it can be registered again. A statutory write-off cannot be registered in the NT or anywhere else. Because Territory roads and weather are hard on vehicles, flood and impact records from the wet season are worth reading closely.
The registration block on the certificate shows the plate, expiry, make, model and colour held against the VIN. A mismatch with the car in front of you is a reason to stop.
Free Northern Territory checks to do first
Use the MVR free rego check first. It confirms the registration status and expiry, the make, model and body type, and the last inspection date. Many Territory vehicles need periodic inspections, so a recent date tells you it has at least been looked at.
It shows nothing about finance, theft or write-offs and prints no VIN. The MVR also notes that it does not independently verify the information shown. Treat it as a first filter, not a clearance.
NT REVS check free?
There is no free REVS check in the Northern Territory. The lowest price for the certificate is $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au, and that requires the full VIN. If the seller gives you the VIN, that route works and the certificate is identical to ours.
For $12.95 we add the plate lookup, a one-line verdict and a free re-run if you mistype. The $27.95 report also decodes write-off damage codes, lists open safety recalls for the make and model, and includes a free finance re-check within 14 days. If no certificate arrives within 15 minutes, we refund in full. The $2.00 search fee is itemised on the receipt.
What it cannot tell you
- How much is owing. The certificate names the secured party; the figure comes from them.
- Owner history. The NT does not sell an owner-count report to the public.
- The condition of repairs after an NT write-off inspection.
- Service records, odometer accuracy or bush damage that was never insured.

Questions people ask
Is there a free REVS check in the NT?
No. The free MVR check covers registration status, expiry and the last inspection date. Finance, stolen and write-off status need a PPSR search, which is $2.00 by VIN at ppsr.gov.au or $12.95 here by plate or VIN.
Can I do a Darwin REVS check with just the plate?
Yes. Enter the NT plate, confirm the vehicle we return and we run the search. The PPSR itself only accepts a VIN, so the plate lookup is included in the price.
Does the NT still have REVS?
No. Encumbrance registers in every state and territory closed when the national PPSR started in January 2012. A REVS check for an NT car is a PPSR search.
The car was written off in Queensland but is registered in the NT. Is that legal?
A repairable write-off can be registered in the NT after it passes the required inspection. A statutory write-off cannot be registered anywhere. The certificate shows which classification applies and which state recorded it.
Will the check show me the loan balance?
No. Ask the seller for a payout letter from the secured party named on the certificate.
How fast is an NT REVS check?
Most arrive within two minutes. The register is offline on Wednesday nights from 9pm to midnight Canberra time, which is a little earlier by the Darwin clock; orders then are delivered by 7am.
