New South Wales rego check: free status lookup, plus what it won’t tell you

Service NSW gives you more than any other state for free, including odometer readings. It still cannot tell you whether a car is financed, stolen or written off. Here is how the two checks fit together.

Check a car now

You see the make and model before you pay.

Takes about ten seconds. Free re-run if you mistype.

Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search

Check New South Wales rego free

Go to the Service NSW free rego check linked above. It costs nothing and asks only for the number plate. It works for vehicles currently or previously registered in NSW, so an interstate plate will return nothing.

The result is unusually rich. You get the expiry date, whether the registration is suspended or cancelled, and any restrictions or concessions. You also get the CTP insurer and policy expiry, and the make, model, variant, colour and body shape. For cars old enough to need a yearly safety inspection, it also returns up to three recent odometer readings taken at those inspections.

Those readings are the most useful free data in Australian car buying. Compare them with the odometer in the car and with the kilometres in the ad. A figure that falls, or a jump that does not fit the car’s age, is a question for the seller before anything else.

What the free New South Wales check doesn’t show

Service NSW does not show finance owing, stolen status or write-off history, and it masks the VIN to its last four characters. It also does not show who the registered operator is, or how many operators the car has had. Service NSW sells that last piece separately in a paid vehicle history report.

Finance, stolen and write-off status all come from the Personal Property Securities Register. You can search it yourself for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au if you have the full 17-character VIN. Our $12.95 PPSR certificate includes the plate-to-VIN lookup, the unaltered certificate, a plain-English verdict and a free re-run if you mistype.

For a NSW car, the write-off answer carries extra weight. NSW has not re-registered repairable write-offs since 2011 except in narrow cases, so a NSW car on the Written-Off Vehicle Register is almost always a statutory write-off.

Rego check vs PPSR check in New South Wales

The Service NSW check describes the car and its registration today: who insures it, when the rego ends, and what the odometer read at recent inspections. It is the best free check in the country and you should always run it.

The PPSR certificate describes the claims against the car: a lender’s security interest, a stolen report, a write-off declaration. None of those stop a car being registered, which is exactly why a current rego is not evidence of a clean history.

Run both. The free check first, because it is free and because the odometer readings may end the conversation. The PPSR check on the day you hand over money, because a security interest can be registered at any time.

New South Wales rego fees, renewal and transfer

NSW registration costs are made up of a registration fee and motor vehicle tax based on the vehicle’s weight. The CTP green slip is bought separately from an insurer of your choice. Light vehicles more than five years old also need a yearly safety inspection, the pink slip, before renewal. The current amounts and the renewal process are on the Service NSW site. We do not sell renewals.

Transfers are lodged with Service NSW by the buyer, online or in a service centre, within the period Service NSW sets. The seller lodges a notice of disposal. Stamp duty is calculated on the price or market value, whichever is higher, and the calculator is on the Service NSW site.

Buying a used car in New South Wales: the three checks

One: the Service NSW free rego check. Confirm the plate matches the make, model, variant and colour, note the expiry and the CTP insurer, and write down the odometer readings to compare with the dash.

Two: the PPSR check, by plate or VIN, on the day of purchase. A security interest means getting a payout letter from the named lender before any deposit. Any write-off entry on a NSW car is close to a deal-breaker.

Three: a mechanical inspection. The pink slip inspection is a minimum safety check, not a condition report. An independent inspector will find the things neither register records: oil leaks, worn suspension, poorly repaired panels and the smell of a flood car.

Questions people ask

Is the NSW rego check free?

Yes. The Service NSW rego check is free, needs no login and sets no limit on how many plates you check. Only the PPSR search, which covers finance, stolen and write-off status, costs money: $2.00 direct or $12.95 through us with the plate lookup and verdict.

Can I check NSW rego with just the plate?

Yes. The plate is the only input Service NSW accepts. The check does not accept a VIN, and it only covers vehicles that are or were registered in NSW.

Does the NSW rego check show the owner?

No. The free check shows the car and its registration, never the registered operator. Service NSW sells a paid vehicle history report that shows the number of NSW operators and whether they were single or joint, but not their names.

How do I find the VIN from the rego in NSW?

The free check shows only the last four characters. For the full VIN, ask for the certificate of registration or a photo of the compliance plate. Or enter the plate in our search box: we look it up and show you the car before you pay.

Does the free check show odometer readings for every NSW car?

Only for cars that have had yearly safety inspections, which NSW requires for light vehicles more than five years old. Newer cars will show no readings, and Service NSW says up to three readings appear where available.

Does the NSW rego check show if a car is written off?

No. Write-off status comes through the PPSR from the Written-Off Vehicle Register. Because NSW rarely re-registers repairable write-offs, a NSW car with current rego and a write-off entry is unusual and deserves careful questions.

What if the car is registered in another state?

Use that state’s free check; we link each one from its own page. The PPSR is national, so a single PPSR check covers finance, stolen and write-off status for a car registered anywhere in Australia.
