Tasmania rego check: free status lookup, plus what it won’t tell you
Transport Tasmania offers a free registration lookup by plate. It tells you whether the car is registered and insured, and nothing about finance, theft or write-offs. Tasmania also has one gap no other state has, explained below.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
Check Tasmania rego free
Use the Transport Tasmania free rego check linked above. It is free and needs only the registration number. It covers vehicles registered in Tasmania; mainland plates return nothing.
The result tells you whether the vehicle is currently registered in Tasmania and when that registration expires. It also shows the vehicle model and body type, the MAIB premium class and any restrictions or conditions. It does not show the VIN, the engine number or an odometer reading.
Because no VIN is shown, the Tasmanian free check cannot get you to a PPSR search on its own. You will need the registration papers, a photo of the compliance plate, or the plate lookup in our search box.
What the free Tasmania check doesn’t show
The free check does not show finance owing, stolen status, write-off history or previous owners. Finance and write-off status are on the Personal Property Securities Register, searchable for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au with a VIN. Through us it is $12.95 with the plate lookup, the unaltered certificate and a plain-English verdict.
Stolen status is the Tasmanian gap. Tasmania does not supply its stolen-vehicle records to NEVDIS, so a PPSR certificate cannot confirm a Tasmanian car has not been reported stolen in Tasmania. A theft reported in another state will show. We print this limit on every Tasmanian report rather than letting a clean certificate imply more than it means.
Write-offs are recorded normally. A Tasmanian car that was declared a repairable write-off and later re-registered after inspection will show the entry and its damage codes on the certificate.
Rego check vs PPSR check in Tasmania
The Transport Tasmania check answers one question: is this plate registered, and until when. It is quick, free and reliable for that purpose, and it also confirms the MAIB cover that comes with Tasmanian registration.
The PPSR certificate answers the questions that cost money if you get them wrong: whether a lender can repossess the car, and whether it has been written off. For a Tasmanian car it cannot answer the stolen question in full, so confirming the seller’s identity against the registration papers matters more here.
Neither check shows odometer readings or owner history, and Tasmania does not sell a vehicle history report. The service book and an inspection are your only sources for those.
Tasmania rego fees, renewal and transfer
Tasmanian registration bundles the registration fee, the MAIB premium and duty into a single amount that varies with the vehicle class and the term chosen. Current figures, concessions and renewal options are on the Transport Tasmania site, and renewing there costs nothing extra. We do not sell renewals or reminders.
On a sale, the seller and buyer complete the transfer through Transport Tasmania and the buyer pays duty on the vehicle’s value. Tasmania does not require a roadworthy certificate for a private transfer of a currently registered light vehicle, which is one more reason to arrange your own inspection. The transfer form and duty details are on the Transport Tasmania site.
Buying a used car in Tasmania: the three checks
First, run the Transport Tasmania free rego check and confirm the plate matches the model and body type being sold. Check the registration is current, or price in getting it re-registered.
Second, get the VIN from the papers or the compliance plate and run a PPSR check on the day you pay. Finance showing means a payout letter from the named lender. A write-off entry means asking for the inspection and repair paperwork. Remember the stolen flag cannot cover Tasmanian theft reports.
Third, pay for an independent inspection. With no roadworthy requirement at transfer and no odometer data available, the inspection is the only one of the three checks that tells you about the car’s mechanical condition.

Questions people ask
Is the Tasmanian rego check free?
Yes. Transport Tasmania provides the registration lookup free of charge with no account. The PPSR check for finance and write-off status is the only part that costs money: $2.00 direct with a VIN, or $12.95 through us with the plate lookup and verdict.
Can I check Tasmanian rego with just the plate?
Yes. The registration number is all Transport Tasmania asks for. The lookup only covers vehicles registered in Tasmania.
Does the Tasmanian rego check show the owner?
No. It shows registration status, expiry, model, body type and insurance class, never the registered operator. Tasmania does not sell an owner-history report, so ask to see photo ID that matches the registration papers.
How do I find the VIN from the rego in Tasmania?
The free check does not show the VIN at all. Ask the seller for the registration certificate or renewal notice, read the compliance plate, or enter the Tasmanian plate in our search box. We look up the VIN and show you the make, model and year before you pay.
Can a PPSR check tell me if a Tasmanian car is stolen?
Only partly. Tasmania does not supply stolen-vehicle data to the national database behind the PPSR, so a theft reported in Tasmania will not appear. A theft reported in any other state will. Check the seller’s identity against the papers as your main safeguard.
Do I need a roadworthy certificate to buy a car in Tasmania?
Not for a private transfer of a car that is currently registered. That removes one safety net other states have, so an independent pre-purchase inspection is strongly worth the cost.
