Where the VIN is on a motorcycle

On most motorcycles built since 1989 the 17-character VIN is stamped into the steering head. That is the short tube at the front of the frame that the forks pivot in. Turn the bars to one side and look at the right or left face of the headstock. Many bikes also carry a compliance plate or sticker on the frame, often near the headstock or under the seat, that repeats the VIN. The engine number is stamped separately on the crankcase.

Older and some imported bikes may have a frame number rather than a VIN. The PPSR accepts a chassis number in place of a VIN, so the search still works. Photograph the stamping yourself rather than relying on the number in the advertisement.

What the PPSR shows for a motorbike

Motorcycles are stolen and written off at least as readily as cars, and a crashed bike is easy to rebuild from parts. Checking that the frame number on the bike matches the certificate is the single most useful thing you can do before paying.

  • Finance owing: any security interest registered against the frame, and the lender named on it. Never the amount owing.
  • Stolen status from NEVDIS, covering the vehicle, plates and engine, except for Tasmanian records.
  • Written-off status, statutory or repairable, with the damage codes.
  • The plate, expiry, make, model and colour held for the VIN.

How to check a motorcycle VIN

  1. Find the VIN or frame number on the steering head and compare it with the registration papers.
  2. Enter the rego and state, or the VIN, in the search box above. We show you the make and model on record to confirm.
  3. Pay $12.95 for the certificate or $27.95 for the decoded report.
  4. Read the finance, stolen and written-off sections, and check the plate and colour on the certificate against the bike.
  5. Have the VIN already? You can search it yourself at ppsr.gov.au for $2.

What a motorcycle VIN check cannot show

Service history, crash damage that was never claimed, and odometer accuracy are not on the register. Build and recall data for motorcycles may be limited compared with cars. Your state's free rego check will confirm registration status; Victoria's includes a motorcycle category and prints the VIN from the plate.

Questions people ask

Does the PPSR cover motorcycles?

Yes. A motorcycle is a motor vehicle on the register and is searched by VIN or frame number exactly like a car. The same NEVDIS stolen and written-off data is returned.

Can I do a motorbike REVS check by rego?

Yes. Enter the plate and state and we convert it to the VIN. The PPSR itself only accepts a VIN or chassis number.

Where is the VIN on a motorbike?

Stamped into the steering head at the front of the frame, and usually repeated on a compliance plate or sticker. The engine number is on the crankcase and is a different number.

What if the bike only has a frame number, not a 17-character VIN?

Search it as a chassis number. The PPSR accepts chassis numbers for vehicles without a VIN, and so does our search box.

Is a motorcycle history check free?

The PPSR search is $2 at ppsr.gov.au if you have the frame number. Your state rego check is free but shows no finance. Our $12.95 check adds the plate lookup, the verdict page and a free re-run on typos.
