VIN check Victoria: free decode, then finance and write-off check

Victoria is the easiest state to get a VIN in, because the free rego check prints all 17 characters. Decode it free here, then run the $12.95 PPSR check for finance, stolen and write-off status.

Where to find the VIN on a Victorian car and its rego papers

On the car, the VIN is on the compliance plate in the engine bay or on the driver-side door pillar. It is repeated on the door jamb sticker and on a plate at the base of the windscreen. All three should agree with each other and with the paperwork.

In Victoria the VIN appears on the registration certificate and on the renewal notice from VicRoads. The roadworthy certificate a private seller must supply also carries the VIN, which gives you a fourth document to compare.

If you only have a number plate, Victoria is the one state where that is enough. The Service Victoria free rego check prints the full VIN and the engine number against the plate. It also accepts a VIN or chassis number as the search input. That lets you check the VIN on the compliance plate is registered in Victoria and matches the advertised make and colour.

What a VIN check shows

A decode tells you what the manufacturer built into the number: the maker, the country of build, the check digit and often the model year. Our free tool does this instantly and is the right first step when you are not sure the number was copied correctly.

A PPSR search is where the history lives. The certificate shows every security interest registered over the VIN, with the secured party named. It adds the stolen flag from NEVDIS, the Written-Off Vehicle Register entry with damage codes, and the plate, expiry, make, model and colour held for that VIN. In Victoria a repairable write-off can be re-registered after a Vehicle Identity Validation inspection, so these entries do turn up on registered cars.

Our $27.95 car check report takes the same certificate and explains it. Each damage code is decoded, and the Register of Approved Vehicles supplies identity and build date for cars first supplied from about 2021. It adds open recalls for the make, model and year, Green Vehicle Guide fuel figures, and a free finance re-check within 14 days.

Free VIN checks in Victoria

Our free VIN check validates the format, tests the check digit and names the manufacturer. There is no sign-up and nothing is stored against you.

The Service Victoria free rego check, linked above, is unusually generous. Beyond the full VIN and engine number it shows the make, body type, colour, year of manufacture, registration status and expiry. Note what it does not show: no CTP insurer, no odometer, and no finance or write-off status, for which it points you to the PPSR.

The Register of Approved Vehicles at rover.infrastructure.gov.au is a free Australian Government search by VIN. It returns make, model code, build date and approval pathway for cars first supplied in Australia from about 2021. It will be empty for most of the used market, and that is expected.

The $2.00 PPSR search at ppsr.gov.au is the cheapest way to the certificate if you already have the VIN, which in Victoria you usually do. What you give up is the plain-English verdict, the decoded codes and the free re-run on a typo.

How to check finance and write-offs by VIN

  1. Take the VIN from the compliance plate and confirm it against the rego certificate, the roadworthy certificate and the Service Victoria free check.
  2. Enter the VIN, or the Victorian plate, in the search box above. We show the make, model and year before asking for payment.
  3. Choose the $12.95 PPSR certificate or the $27.95 car check report and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  4. Read the verdict. A security interest means asking the seller for a payout letter from the named lender. A repairable write-off means asking for the VIV inspection paperwork and the repair invoices.
  5. Keep the 16-digit search number from the report. The certificate can be retrieved free from the PPSR at any time with it.

What it cannot tell you

  • The amount owing. No PPSR certificate from anyone shows the balance.
  • Owner and transfer history. VicRoads sells a separate paid vehicle report with the Victorian operator count, transfer history and roadworthy odometer readings; the PPSR holds none of it.
  • Odometer readings. Victoria records them at each roadworthy inspection, but only inside that paid VicRoads report.
  • Repairs paid for privately, which never reach the Written-Off Vehicle Register.
  • Whether the person selling is the registered operator. Match the name on the rego certificate to photo ID.

Questions people ask

Can I get a full VIN from a Victorian rego number for free?

Yes. The Service Victoria free rego check prints the full 17-character VIN and the engine number against the plate. It is the only state check that does. Victoria could change that at any time, so our search box also accepts the plate.

Is a VIN check free in Victoria?

The decode, the Service Victoria rego check and the Register of Approved Vehicles are all free. The PPSR search that shows finance, stolen and write-off status costs $2.00 direct or $12.95 through us with a plain-English verdict and a free re-run on typos.

What is a VIV inspection and why does it matter?

A Vehicle Identity Validation inspection is what a repairable write-off must pass before Victoria will re-register it. If the PPSR certificate shows a repairable write-off on a registered Victorian car, the inspection should have happened; ask the seller for the paperwork.

Does the Victorian free check show if a car is stolen?

It does not. Service Victoria refers you to the PPSR for stolen and written-off status. The PPSR certificate carries the NEVDIS stolen flag for Victorian cars.

Can I check a car with a chassis number instead of a VIN?

Pre-1989 cars often have a chassis number rather than a 17-character VIN. The Service Victoria check accepts a chassis number, and the PPSR can be searched by chassis number too. Our free decoder only validates true 17-character VINs.

Do I still need a PPSR check if the car has a roadworthy certificate?

Yes. A roadworthy certificate covers the car’s mechanical condition on the day of inspection. It says nothing about finance owing, stolen status or write-off history.
