Where to find the VIN on a Queensland car and its rego papers

A VIN is 17 characters long and never contains the letters I, O or Q. On most cars it is stamped on the compliance plate in the engine bay or on the driver-side door pillar. It is usually repeated on a sticker inside the driver door jamb and on a small plate at the base of the windscreen.

In Queensland the VIN is also printed on the registration certificate and on the renewal notice TMR sends before the rego runs out. Ask the seller to photograph either document. Check that the characters match the plate on the car itself before you spend anything.

If all you have is a number plate from an ad, the TMR free rego check usually prints the VIN in full. We say usually because TMR does not list the VIN among the fields it promises, and some records come back without one. When it is missing, our plate lookup converts the Queensland rego to the VIN for you.

What a VIN check shows

In Australia the phrase covers two different things. A VIN decode reads the number itself: the manufacturer from the first three characters, the check digit, and the model year where the maker encodes one. It tells you nothing about what has happened to the car since it left the factory.

A VIN search of the Personal Property Securities Register is the history part. The certificate shows any security interest registered over the car, which usually means finance is still owing, and names the secured party. It also carries NEVDIS data: stolen status, Written-Off Vehicle Register status with damage codes, and the plate, state, expiry, make, model and colour held against the VIN.

Our $27.95 report builds on that certificate. It decodes the write-off damage codes and pulls identity and build date from the Register of Approved Vehicles for cars first supplied from about 2021. It also lists open safety recalls for the make, model and year, and adds Green Vehicle Guide fuel and CO2 figures for cars from 2004.

Free VIN checks in Queensland

Start with our free VIN check. It confirms the number is a valid 17-character VIN, flags a failed check digit, and names the manufacturer and country of build. A typo in the VIN is the most common reason a PPSR search comes back empty, so this step is worth ten seconds.

The Australian Government Register of Approved Vehicles is free and searchable by VIN at rover.infrastructure.gov.au. For cars first supplied in Australia from about 2021 it returns the make, model code, build date, approval pathway and seat count. The approval pathway tells you whether the car came in as a new type-approved vehicle or as a used import. Older cars return nothing, which is normal rather than a warning sign.

The TMR free rego check, linked above, gives you status, expiry, make, model, body and purpose of use. A purpose of use of commercial, taxi or hire is worth asking about. Those cars tend to have covered far more kilometres than a private car of the same age.

Finally, you can run the PPSR search yourself for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au. You need the VIN, not the plate, and you get the certificate without any explanation of the codes on it. That is the same certificate we include, which is why we show the $2 option here rather than hiding it.

How to check finance and write-offs by VIN

  1. Read the VIN from the compliance plate and compare it with the rego papers and the TMR free check. If the three do not agree, stop and ask why.
  2. Enter the VIN, or the Queensland plate, in the search box at the top of this page. We show the make, model and year before you pay anything.
  3. Pick the $12.95 PPSR certificate or the $27.95 car check report and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  4. Read the verdict. A security interest means a lender may still be owed money; ask the seller for a payout letter from that lender. A write-off entry means the car was once declared uneconomic to repair; ask for the repair invoices and the inspection paperwork.
  5. Keep the 16-digit search number from your report. You can retrieve the certificate free from the PPSR at any time with it, and the car check report includes a free finance re-check within 14 days.

What it cannot tell you

  • How much is owing. The register records that an interest exists, never the balance.
  • Who owns the car, or how many owners it has had. Queensland does not sell an owner-count report, and the TMR check deliberately leaves the registered operator out.
  • Odometer history. No Queensland source publishes readings, so compare the odometer with service stamps and tyre wear yourself.
  • Accident repairs that were never claimed on insurance, or a cancelled registration. TMR cannot search cancelled registrations, so a car that returns no result on the free check deserves a closer look.
  • Whether the person selling the car is the person on the rego papers. Ask for photo ID and match the name.

Questions people ask

Is a VIN check free in Queensland?

The decode is free here, the TMR rego check is free, and the Register of Approved Vehicles is free for cars first supplied from about 2021. The PPSR search costs $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au. Our $12.95 certificate adds the plate-to-VIN lookup, a plain-English verdict and a free re-run if you mistype.

Can I get the VIN from a Queensland rego number?

Usually. The TMR free rego check often shows the full VIN against the plate, although TMR does not guarantee the field. If it is missing, enter the plate in our search box and we look the VIN up and show you the make, model and year before you pay.

What is the difference between a VIN check and a rego check in QLD?

The TMR rego check tells you whether the plate is currently registered and what the car is. A VIN check through the PPSR tells you whether money is owing on it, whether it is recorded as stolen and whether it has been written off. You want both before a private sale.

Does a VIN check show if a car is stolen?

Yes. Every PPSR vehicle certificate carries the stolen flag from NEVDIS, the national vehicle database, for every state except Tasmania. A Queensland-registered car that was reported stolen anywhere else in Australia will still show.

What if the VIN on the car does not match the papers?

Walk away unless the seller can explain it with documents. A mismatch between the compliance plate, the door sticker and the rego certificate is the classic sign of a rebirthed or misidentified car. No certificate can clear it up for you.

Can a VIN tell me the build year of a Queensland car?

Only sometimes. Many manufacturers encode the model year in the tenth character, but not all do, and model year is not the same as build date. The compliance plate shows the build month and year, and for cars first supplied from about 2021 the Register of Approved Vehicles shows it too.
