Queensland rego check: free status lookup, plus what it won’t tell you
Queensland Transport and Main Roads runs a free rego check that answers the first question: is this plate registered, and until when. This page explains what it shows, what it leaves out, and how to cover the rest for $12.95.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
Check Queensland rego free
Use the TMR free rego check linked above. It is free, it needs no account, and it is the same source every paid rego-check site in Queensland draws from. You can search by registration number or, for vehicles made from 1989, by VIN. You cannot search by chassis number or engine number.
Within a few seconds you get the registration status and expiry date, the make, model, body shape and colour, the purpose of use, and the CTP insurer. Purpose of use is worth a second look: a car recorded as commercial, taxi or hire has usually done far more kilometres than a private car of the same age.
Two limits to know. TMR cannot return cancelled registrations, so a car that shows no result may simply have lapsed. And TMR never shows the registered operator, so the free check cannot tell you whether the person selling the car is the person who owns it.
What the free Queensland check doesn’t show
The TMR check is a registration check, not a history check. It does not show whether a lender has a security interest over the car, which usually means finance is still owing. It does not show whether the car is recorded as stolen. It does not show whether it has ever been written off, and it says nothing about previous owners.
Those first three answers sit on the Personal Property Securities Register, an Australian Government register that holds security interests plus NEVDIS stolen and write-off data for every state. A PPSR search costs $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au if you have the VIN. Our $12.95 PPSR certificate adds the plate-to-VIN lookup for Queensland cars, a plain-English verdict and a free re-run if you mistype.
Rego check vs PPSR check in Queensland
Think of them as two different questions. The rego check asks whether the car is legally on the road today. The PPSR check asks whether buying it will cost you more than the asking price.

Queensland rego fees, renewal and transfer
Registration fees in Queensland depend on the number of cylinders or the motive power, the registration term you choose and the CTP insurer you nominate. The current figures, renewal options and concession rules are on the Queensland Transport and Main Roads site, and renewing there is free of any agent fee. We do not sell renewals or reminders.
When a registered car changes hands, the seller must supply a safety certificate before advertising it. The buyer lodges the transfer with TMR within the period TMR sets. The transfer form and the duty calculator are both on the TMR site. If the rego has lapsed, a new safety certificate is needed before it can be re-registered.
Buying a used car in Queensland: the three checks
First, run the TMR free rego check and make sure the plate, make, model and colour match the car in front of you. Note the expiry date; rego with months to run is worth something, rego that has lapsed means a safety certificate before you can drive it.
Second, run a PPSR check on the VIN on the day you pay. Finance can be registered at any time, so a certificate from last month does not protect you. If a security interest shows, ask for a payout letter from the lender named on the certificate.
Third, get the car inspected. A Queensland safety certificate confirms the basics on the day it was issued, not that the car is mechanically sound. An independent pre-purchase inspection costs more than both checks together and is the only one of the three that looks at the engine.

Questions people ask
Is the Queensland rego check free?
Yes. The TMR check rego service is free and needs no account. Any site charging you to see Queensland registration status and expiry is reselling that free lookup. The paid part worth having is the PPSR certificate, which covers finance, stolen and write-off status.
Can I check Queensland rego with just the plate?
Yes. The TMR check accepts the registration number alone and returns the status, expiry, make, model, body and purpose of use. It also accepts a VIN for vehicles made from 1989.
Does the QLD rego check show the owner?
No. TMR states that information about the registered owner is not provided. No free check in any state shows the owner. To confirm the seller, match the name on the registration certificate to their photo ID.
How do I find the VIN from the rego in Queensland?
The TMR free check usually prints the VIN in full against the plate, although TMR does not promise the field. If it is missing, ask for the registration certificate or enter the plate in our search box; we look up the VIN and show you the car before you pay.
Does the free check tell me if a Queensland car is written off?
No. Write-off status comes from the Written-Off Vehicle Register through the PPSR. A Queensland repairable write-off can be re-registered after a WOVI inspection, so a current rego does not mean the car was never written off.
Why did the TMR check return nothing for a plate?
Usually because the registration has been cancelled, which TMR cannot display, or because the plate was typed incorrectly. Ask the seller for the registration certificate and search the PPSR by VIN instead.
