VIN check Australia: decode the VIN free, then check finance and write-offs

The VIN is the 17-character vehicle identification number stamped on every car built since 1989. It is the only identifier the PPSR accepts, so every finance, stolen or write-off search in Australia starts from it.

A free VIN decode reads the number itself. It confirms the check digit is valid and identifies the manufacturer from the first three characters. For cars first supplied from about 2021 it also pulls build data from the Register of Approved Vehicles. None of that tells you whether money is owing on the car.

A paid VIN check is a PPSR search. The certificate shows security interests and the secured party. The NEVDIS block shows stolen status, written-off status and the plate, expiry, make, model and colour recorded against that VIN.

• Free decode: valid or invalid, manufacturer, plant and model-year data where the maker encodes it
• Free RAV lookup: make, model, build date and approval pathway for 2021+ cars, which flags grey imports
• PPSR certificate: finance owing, secured party, stolen, written-off, registration details
• Report tier: decoded write-off codes, open recalls, fuel use and a "Not in this report" list

Check the number in at least two places and make sure they match each other and the paperwork. A mismatch is a reason to walk away.

• The compliance plate or build plate, usually in the engine bay or on a door pillar
• The sticker or plate in the driver's door jamb
• The base of the windscreen on the driver's side, visible from outside the car
• The registration certificate or renewal notice, and the insurance policy
• Victoria's free rego check prints the full VIN; Queensland often does; other states mask or omit it

Our free VIN check page validates the checksum, decodes the manufacturer and runs the Register of Approved Vehicles lookup, with no account and no payment. It is the right first step for any car. If all you want is to confirm the VIN is real, it is also the last step you need.

The Register of Approved Vehicles at rover.infrastructure.gov.au is free and searchable by VIN. It lists cars first supplied under the current import rules, roughly 2021 onwards, with make, model, build date and the approval pathway. An older car will simply return no record.

The PPSR itself charges $2.00 per search at ppsr.gov.au, and that is the only place finance and write-off data lives. Recalls are free at vehiclerecalls.gov.au by make and model. Neither site accepts a number plate.

Decode a VIN free

1. Copy the 17-character VIN from the compliance plate or rego papers. VINs never contain the letters I, O or Q.
2. Enter it in the search box. We validate the check digit and show you the make, model and year before you pay.
3. Choose the certificate ($12.95) or the car check report ($27.95), then pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
4. Read the verdict page and keep the certificate PDF. Its search number lets you retrieve it free from the PPSR later.

The PPSR is national, so a VIN check covers a car registered anywhere in Australia. State pages matter for two things. The first is how to get the VIN from a plate when the ad does not show it. The second is what each state requires before a repairable write-off can go back on the road.

The free rego checks are the quickest way to see the difference. Victoria prints the full VIN, Queensland often does, NSW, SA and WA mask most of it, and Tasmania, the ACT and the NT print none. Pick your state below for the link and the write-off rule that applies there.

• How much is owing. No PPSR certificate shows a balance; ask the seller for a payout letter.
• The owner's name or the number of previous owners. Only Service NSW and VicRoads sell owner-count reports, for their own state only.
• Accident damage that never reached the Written-Off Vehicle Register, service history or odometer tampering.
• Whether a Tasmanian car is stolen, because Tasmania does not supply stolen-vehicle data to the PPSR.
• Build data for most cars older than about 2021, which the Register of Approved Vehicles does not hold.
