Western Australia rego check: free status lookup, plus what it won’t tell you

In Western Australia a rego check is a vehicle licence check, and the Department of Transport provides one free. It confirms the licence; it does not confirm the car is free of finance or write-offs.

Check Western Australia rego free

Use the DoT WA free licence check linked above. It is free, there is no login, and it needs only the number plate. It covers vehicles licensed in Western Australia; a plate from another state returns nothing.

The result confirms the licence expiry date and whether the vehicle is currently licensed, unlicensed or suspended. It also shows the make, model and body type so you can match the plate to the car in the ad. Since 2026 the VIN appears with about half its characters masked, so you can no longer copy a full VIN from this check.

An unlicensed result is not automatically bad news. Plenty of WA cars are sold unlicensed, but the buyer then needs an inspection before relicensing, and the car cannot be driven home without a temporary permit. Factor that time and cost into the price.

What the free Western Australia check doesn’t show

The DoT check says nothing about finance owing, stolen status, write-off history or previous owners. It is a licence lookup, and it is honest about that. Western Australia also sells no owner-history report, so owner count is simply not available to buyers here.

Finance, stolen and write-off status come from the Personal Property Securities Register. The direct search at ppsr.gov.au costs $2.00 and requires the full VIN, which the DoT check no longer gives you. Our $12.95 PPSR certificate takes the WA plate instead, looks up the VIN, shows you the car to confirm, and delivers the certificate with a plain-English verdict.

WA records both statutory and repairable write-offs on the national register. A repairable write-off that passed inspection and was relicensed will still show on the certificate, with the damage codes.

Rego check vs PPSR check in Western Australia

The licence check is about today: is the car licensed, until when, and is it the car described. The PPSR check is about the past and the money: has a lender registered an interest, has it been reported stolen, has an insurer declared it a write-off.

They do not overlap, so running one is not a substitute for the other. The licence check is free and takes seconds. The PPSR certificate is $2.00 direct or $12.95 with the plate lookup, and is best run on the day you pay rather than the day you first see the car.

Western Australia rego fees, renewal and transfer

A WA vehicle licence fee is calculated on the vehicle’s tare weight and includes the compulsory motor injury insurance premium and a recording fee. Current rates, concessions and the three, six and twelve-month options are on the Department of Transport WA site, where renewal is free of agent fees. We do not sell renewals.

When a WA car is sold, the seller notifies the Department of the change of ownership. The buyer lodges the transfer and pays duty within the period the Department sets. If the licence has expired, the buyer will need a vehicle examination at an authorised inspection station before it can be relicensed. The forms, the duty calculator and the inspection station list are on the Department site.

Buying a used car in Western Australia: the three checks

First, the DoT WA free licence check. Confirm the plate belongs to the make, model and body in the ad, and note whether the licence is current. If it is not, budget for an inspection and a permit.

Second, a PPSR check by plate or VIN on the day of purchase. A security interest means a payout letter from the lender named on the certificate before any money moves. A write-off entry means asking to see the inspection paperwork and repairer invoices.

Third, an independent mechanical inspection. WA does not inspect most passenger cars at each renewal, so a car may have gone years without anyone looking underneath it. That makes the pre-purchase inspection more important here than in states with annual checks.

Questions people ask

Is the WA rego check free?

Yes. The Department of Transport licence expiry check is free and needs only the plate. Anyone charging for WA licence status alone is reselling that lookup. The paid check worth buying is the PPSR certificate for finance, stolen and write-off status.

Can I check WA rego with just the plate?

Yes. The plate is the only input the DoT check accepts, and it only covers vehicles licensed in Western Australia. The check does not accept a VIN.

Does the WA rego check show the owner?

No. It shows the licence status and a description of the vehicle, never the licence holder. WA does not sell an owner-history report either, so match the seller’s photo ID to the name on the licence papers.

How do I find the VIN from the rego in WA?

The DoT check masks about half the VIN, so it is no longer a source. Ask the seller for the licence papers or a photo of the compliance plate. Or enter the WA plate in our search box: we look up the full VIN and show you the car before you pay.

What is the difference between licensed and registered in WA?

Nothing in practice. Western Australia uses the word licence where other states say registration. A licensed vehicle is registered and can be driven; an unlicensed one cannot until it is inspected and relicensed.

Does a current WA licence mean the car has never been written off?

No. A repairable write-off can be relicensed after inspection, and the write-off stays on the national register for the life of the car. Only the PPSR certificate shows it.
