Where the VIN is on a trailer

Manufactured trailers built since 1989 have a 17-character VIN on a compliance plate, normally riveted to the drawbar or the front cross-member of the chassis. The same number is usually stamped into the drawbar itself. Home-built and older trailers may carry only a chassis number, or a VIN issued by the state authority when the trailer was first registered.

Because a plate can be unriveted and moved, check the stamping as well as the plate, and compare both with the registration papers. On boat trailers, do not confuse the trailer's VIN with the boat's hull identification number; they are separate items on the register.

What the PPSR shows for a trailer

Trailers are among the easiest things to steal and re-identify, and the NEVDIS data behind the stolen and written-off fields may be limited for trailers compared with cars. Treat a clear NEVDIS result as helpful rather than conclusive, and put more weight on the physical VIN check. The finance search works the same as for any vehicle.

  • Finance owing: any security interest registered against the VIN or chassis number, and the secured party. The balance is never shown.
  • Stolen status from NEVDIS where a record exists, except for Tasmanian records.
  • Written-off and registration details where held for the identifier.

How to check a trailer VIN

  1. Find the VIN or chassis number on the compliance plate and the drawbar stamping, and confirm they match each other and the papers.
  2. Enter the rego and state, or the VIN, in the search box above and confirm the details we show.
  3. Pay $12.95 for the certificate or $27.95 for the report.
  4. Read the finance section and the NEVDIS block, and compare the plate on the certificate with the plate on the trailer.
  5. Have the VIN? The search costs $2 at ppsr.gov.au if you want to run it yourself.

What a trailer VIN check cannot show

Load rating compliance, brake condition, welds and repairs are not on any register. Build data is unlikely to be available for most trailers. Your state's free rego check confirms registration status and expiry; Service Victoria's includes a caravan and trailer category and prints the VIN from the plate.

Questions people ask

Can you do a PPSR check on a trailer?

Yes. A trailer with a VIN or chassis number is searched on the PPSR in the same way as a car. The certificate shows any finance owing and the lender, plus whatever NEVDIS holds for the identifier.

Where is the VIN on a trailer?

On a compliance plate riveted to the drawbar or front cross-member, and usually stamped into the drawbar as well. Older or home-built trailers may have only a chassis number or a state-issued VIN.

Can I check a trailer by rego number?

Yes. Enter the plate and state and we look up the VIN. The PPSR itself only accepts a VIN, chassis number or manufacturer's number.

Does a trailer VIN check cover the boat on it?

No. The boat is searched separately on the PPSR by its hull identification number. The trailer's VIN covers the trailer only.

Is a trailer VIN check free?

The PPSR search is $2 at ppsr.gov.au with the VIN. Your state rego check is free but shows no finance. Our $12.95 check adds the plate lookup, the verdict page and a free re-run on typos.
