Where to find the VIN on a Western Australian car and its rego papers

The 17-character VIN sits on the compliance plate, normally in the engine bay or on the driver-side door pillar. It is repeated on a sticker in the driver door jamb. On most modern cars you can also read it through the windscreen at the bottom of the driver side without opening a door.

Western Australia calls registration a vehicle licence, so the documents are the vehicle licence renewal notice and the licence papers from the Department of Transport. Both print the VIN. If a seller is cagey about paperwork, a photo of the compliance plate is the minimum you should accept.

The DoT WA free licence check is the weakest starting point in the country for VINs. Since 2026 it masks roughly half the characters, so you cannot copy a usable VIN from it. It still confirms the plate, expiry, make, model and colour. For the full VIN, use the papers or enter the WA plate in our search box and we will look it up.

What a VIN check shows

A decode reads the structure of the number: manufacturer, country of build, the check digit and, where the maker encodes it, the model year. It is free and instant, and it is also the limit of what a VIN alone can tell you.

The history comes from the Personal Property Securities Register. Its certificate shows any registered security interest and the secured party. It adds the stolen flag from NEVDIS, the Written-Off Vehicle Register entry with damage codes, and the plate, expiry, make, model and colour held for that VIN. WA records both statutory and repairable write-offs on the national register, so a WA car that was once written off and relicensed after inspection will show as repairable.

The $27.95 car check report explains each damage code and adds build date and approval pathway from the Register of Approved Vehicles for cars first supplied from about 2021. It also lists open safety recalls and re-checks finance free within 14 days.

Free VIN checks in Western Australia

Use our free VIN check first. It validates the 17 characters, tests the check digit and identifies the manufacturer. Perth buyers reading a VIN from a blurry marketplace photo will catch most misreads here.

The Register of Approved Vehicles, at rover.infrastructure.gov.au, is a free Australian Government search by VIN. It covers vehicles first supplied in Australia from about 2021 and returns make, model code, build date, seats, power and the approval pathway. WA has a large share of near-new utes and four-wheel drives, which is exactly where the RAV is useful. Older cars simply return no record.

The DoT WA free licence check, linked above, confirms the licence status and expiry and that the plate belongs to the make and model being advertised. An unlicensed car is not necessarily a problem, but it changes what you need to do before driving it home.

The PPSR itself charges $2.00 per search at ppsr.gov.au, VIN only, with the certificate delivered as issued and no explanation of the codes. Our $12.95 price includes that same certificate plus the plate lookup, a plain-English verdict and a free re-run if you mistype.

How to check finance and write-offs by VIN

  1. Get the full VIN from the compliance plate or the licence papers, since the DoT free check will not show it. Check it against the car.
  2. Enter the VIN or the WA plate in the search box above and confirm the make, model and year we show you.
  3. Choose the $12.95 certificate or the $27.95 report and pay. The report page opens straight away and the PDF follows by email, usually within two minutes.
  4. If a security interest appears, ask the seller for a payout letter from the lender named on the certificate before paying a deposit. If a repairable write-off appears, ask for the inspection paperwork that allowed it back on the road and the repairer invoices.
  5. Keep the 16-digit search number so you can retrieve the certificate free from the PPSR at any time.

What it cannot tell you

  • The balance owing on any finance. The PPSR records the interest, not the amount.
  • Owner history. WA does not sell an owner-count report, and the PPSR never names owners.
  • Odometer history. Neither the DoT check nor the PPSR publishes readings, so a WA buyer relies on the service book and a mechanical inspection.
  • Damage repaired without an insurance claim, which never reaches the Written-Off Vehicle Register.
  • Whether a car licensed interstate is stolen in Tasmania, because Tasmanian stolen records are not supplied to the PPSR.

Questions people ask

Is a VIN check free in WA?

The decode is free here, the DoT WA licence check is free and the Register of Approved Vehicles is free for cars first supplied from about 2021. Finance, stolen and write-off status come from the PPSR, which costs $2.00 direct or $12.95 through us with the plate lookup and verdict included.

Why does the WA rego check hide part of the VIN?

The Department of Transport began masking about half of the VIN on its free licence check in 2026. The check still confirms expiry, make, model and colour. For a full VIN you need the licence papers, the compliance plate, or our plate lookup.

Can I check a WA car by number plate instead of VIN?

Yes. Enter the plate and select WA in the search box. We convert it to the VIN, show you the make, model and year, and run the PPSR search once you confirm. The PPSR itself will not accept a plate.

What does "vehicle licence" mean on WA paperwork?

It is what the rest of Australia calls registration. A licensed vehicle is registered; an unlicensed vehicle has let its registration lapse and cannot be driven on the road until relicensed, which may require an inspection.

Does the VIN check show write-offs from other states?

Yes. The Written-Off Vehicle Register is national. A car written off in Victoria and later licensed in WA still shows the entry, with the damage codes, on the PPSR certificate.

What if I mistype the VIN?

We re-run the search at no charge. If you buy the search yourself at ppsr.gov.au, a mistyped VIN means paying again.
