What the PPSR certificate shows for a NSW car

For a car registered in New South Wales the certificate reports three things from one VIN. Whether a lender or other party holds a registered security interest, and who they are. Whether the car is recorded as stolen. Whether it sits on the Written-Off Vehicle Register as a statutory or repairable write-off, with the incident codes attached.

It also prints the registration details NEVDIS holds for the VIN: plate, state, expiry, make, model and colour. For a NSW car, compare those against the Service NSW free check. Two sources agreeing on the same vehicle is a quiet but real reassurance.

PPSR check NSW: the $2 option and what we add

The Australian Government sells the same certificate for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au. The catch for NSW buyers is the VIN. The Service NSW free check shows only its last four characters, so unless the seller gives you the full number you cannot run the $2 search yourself.

Our $12.95 certificate includes the plate-to-VIN lookup, the certificate unaltered, a one-line verdict and a free re-run if you mistype. The $27.95 report adds decoded write-off codes, recall matches, build data for newer cars and a free finance re-check within 14 days of purchase. Every price is shown with the $2.00 search fee as a separate line.

NSW write-offs and re-registration

New South Wales is the strictest state on write-offs. Since 2011 a repairable write-off cannot normally be registered again in NSW. The exceptions are narrow, covering cases such as hail-damaged cars and vehicles inherited from an estate. In practice, a car written off in NSW is almost always a statutory write-off, and a car on NSW plates should not have a repairable record at all.

That makes the certificate simple to read for NSW cars but important for cars arriving from interstate. A Queensland or Victorian repairable write-off that passed its home-state inspection is legal there and will usually be refused registration here. Check the recording state on the certificate before you buy a car you intend to register in NSW.

Who checks the PPSR in NSW

Private buyers run most hand searches, often standing next to the car. Licensed motor dealers must provide clear title and search their stock as routine. Lenders run a search before approving finance on a used car and then register their own interest. Auction houses generally supply a certificate with each lot.

Insurers, assessors, repairers and dismantlers notify write-offs to the NSW register, which flows through to the national data on the certificate. They are suppliers of the record rather than searchers of it.

How to run it

  1. Enter the NSW plate and select NSW, or paste the 17-character VIN.
  2. Confirm the make, model and year on screen. We charge nothing until you do.
  3. Choose the certificate at $12.95 or the report at $27.95 and pay.
  4. Open the verdict page and keep the emailed PDF and its search number.

What it cannot tell you

  • The amount owing. The certificate names the secured party; ask them for a payout letter.
  • Owner count. Service NSW sells a Vehicle History Report for that; the PPSR does not hold it.
  • Mechanical condition, service history or unreported damage.
  • Odometer tampering. The Service NSW free check lists up to three inspection readings, which helps; the PPSR holds none.

Questions people ask

Can I do a PPSR check in NSW by rego?

Yes. Enter the plate and select NSW. We look up the VIN, show the vehicle for confirmation and run the search. The PPSR itself accepts only a VIN.

Why not just pay $2 at ppsr.gov.au?

You can, if you have the full VIN. The Service NSW free check shows only the last four characters. We add the plate lookup, a plain-English verdict and a free re-run on typos for $12.95.

Can a repairable write-off be registered in NSW?

Generally not since 2011, apart from narrow exceptions. Ask Service NSW about the specific vehicle before paying for a car with a repairable record.

What is the difference between a PPSR check and a REVS check in NSW?

None today. NSW REVS closed in January 2012 and the national PPSR took over. The certificate is identical under either name.

Does the certificate show how much the seller owes?

No. It records that an interest exists and who holds it. The payout figure comes from the lender.

How fast does a NSW PPSR check arrive?

Usually within two minutes. The register is unavailable on Wednesday nights from 9pm to midnight Sydney time; those orders are delivered by 7am.
