PPSR check NT: $2 government certificate included, from $12.95
The MVR free rego check in the Territory shows no VIN. Enter the NT plate here and we find it, run the PPSR search and send the official certificate. The verdict reads easily on a phone in a Darwin car park.
Have the VIN? You can search the PPSR yourself for $2 at ppsr.gov.au. We add the plate lookup, the decoded report and the guarantees. Go to the $2 search
What the PPSR certificate shows for a Northern Territory car
One search covers the whole country, which matters in the Territory because so many vehicles arrive from Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The certificate lists any security interest registered against the VIN with the secured party named. It reports stolen status from the national data. It shows any write-off entry, statutory or repairable, with the incident codes and the state that recorded it.
The registration block prints the plate, expiry, make, model and colour held for the VIN. For an NT car, compare it against the MVR free check and the compliance plate. The MVR notes that it does not independently verify the information it shows, so the certificate is a useful second source.
PPSR check NT: the $2 option and what we add
The Australian Government sells the certificate for $2.00 at ppsr.gov.au. You need the full VIN, which in the NT means reading the compliance plate or the registration certificate, because the free check does not print it.
We charge $12.95 to include the plate lookup, the certificate unaltered, a plain-English verdict and a free re-run on typos. The $27.95 report decodes write-off codes and lists open recalls for the make, model and year. It adds build data for 2021-onward cars and includes a free finance re-check within 14 days. If no certificate arrives within 15 minutes, we refund in full. The $2.00 fee is itemised on the receipt.
Northern Territory write-offs and re-registration
The NT records write-offs on the national register. A statutory write-off cannot be registered anywhere in Australia. A repairable write-off can be repaired and must pass an inspection before the MVR registers it again. The entry on the PPSR remains for the life of the vehicle.
Wet-season flooding and long-distance impacts produce a steady stream of Territory write-offs, and some return to the market repaired. The incident code on the certificate tells you which kind. On the $27.95 report we decode it, including whether a water incident was salt or fresh.
Who checks the PPSR in the NT
Private buyers search by hand from listings, especially for utes and four-wheel drives changing hands between workers on contracts. Dealers must sell cars free of encumbrances and search their stock. Lenders search before financing a used car and register their own interest afterwards. Auction houses attach a certificate to lots.
Insurers and assessors notify NT write-offs, which flow into the national data behind the certificate.
How to run it
- Enter the NT plate and select NT, or type the VIN.
- Confirm the make, model and year on screen. Nothing is charged until you do.
- Select the $12.95 certificate or the $27.95 report and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Read the verdict; the PDF and its search number follow by email within minutes.
- Search again on settlement day for a private sale.
What it cannot tell you
- The amount owing. Ask the secured party named on the certificate for a payout letter.
- Owner history. The NT does not sell an owner-count report.
- The standard of repairs after an NT write-off inspection.
- Service records, odometer accuracy or uninsured bush damage.

Questions people ask
Can I do a PPSR check in the NT by plate?
Yes. Enter the plate and select NT. We find the VIN, which the MVR free check does not show, and run the search after you confirm the vehicle.
Is the certificate the same as the $2 one from ppsr.gov.au?
Yes, delivered unaltered with its 16-digit search number. The $12.95 covers the plate lookup, the verdict and the guarantees.
The car was written off interstate and is now on NT plates. What does the certificate show?
The write-off entry, its classification and the state that recorded it. A repairable write-off can be registered in the NT after inspection; a statutory one cannot be registered anywhere.
Does a Darwin PPSR check show how much is owing?
No. The certificate names the lender. The balance is only available from them.
Is a PPSR check the same as an NT REVS check?
Yes. REVS was the pre-2012 name for the state encumbrance registers. The PPSR replaced all of them in January 2012.
How quickly does an NT PPSR check arrive?
Usually within two minutes. The register is offline for maintenance on Wednesday nights from 9pm to midnight Canberra time; orders then are delivered by 7am.
