Free VIN check Australia: validate and decode any 17-character VIN
Paste a VIN. We check the format and check digit, decode the manufacturer and model year, and look it up on the Commonwealth Register of Approved Vehicles. No email, no charge.
What a free VIN check can and can't tell you
A VIN is 17 characters. The first three identify the manufacturer and country (the WMI), characters four to nine describe the vehicle, and the last eight are the serial section, including the model-year code in position ten. A free decode reads those codes. It cannot read anything that happened to the car after it left the factory.
Three things a buyer actually needs sit on registers that charge or restrict access: finance owing and write-offs on the PPSR ($2 a search at ppsr.gov.au), stolen status via the NEVDIS block on that same certificate, and registration status on your state's free rego check. Our paid check runs the PPSR search by plate or VIN and explains the certificate, from $12.95.
How we decode this
- Format and check digit are computed in your browser and on our server, following ISO 3779.
- Manufacturer, make, model year, body and plant come from the public vPIC decoder maintained by the US safety regulator, which covers most global manufacturers at WMI level.
- Build date, approval holder and entry pathway come from the Australian Government's Register of Approved Vehicles, which lists vehicles first supplied from about 2021.

Questions people ask
Is this VIN check really free?
Yes. The validator, the manufacturer decode and the Register of Approved Vehicles lookup are free and need no email address. The PPSR search for finance, stolen and write-off records costs $2 at ppsr.gov.au, or from $12.95 here with the plate lookup and a decoded report.
What can a free VIN check tell me?
Whether the VIN is well-formed, which manufacturer and plant issued it, the model year code, and for vehicles first supplied in Australia from about 2021, the build date, approval type and whether it came in as an import.
What can it not tell me?
Finance owing, stolen status, write-off history, registration details, owners, odometer or service history. Those need the PPSR (finance, stolen, write-off) or a state registry (rego status).
Why does the check digit fail on my VIN?
The ISO check digit in position 9 is compulsory in North America but optional elsewhere. Many Japanese, European and Australian-built VINs do not use it, so a failed check digit on its own does not mean the VIN is wrong.
Where do I find the VIN?
On the compliance or build plate in the engine bay or door jamb, stamped on the chassis, on the registration certificate or renewal notice, and often at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side.
Can I check a VIN from a number plate?
Not with a free tool: only Victoria prints the full VIN on its free rego check. Our paid check converts a plate to the VIN before you pay and shows you the car first.
